The Oracle Video Encoding StandardTM (VES) API enables commercially available encoding systems to communicate directly, efficiently, and affordably with video servers such as the Oracle Video Server. Oracle has made the specifications of the Oracle Video Encoding Standard freely available to any developer via the World Wide Web or directly from Oracle as part of the Oracle Video Server SDK. Oracle has taken leadership in this emerging technology arena by openly publishing and distributing technical information on the first and only open-standards based video encoding API. HEURIS products which will utilize the API include, MPEG Power ProfessionalTM, a high end MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 software encoder, "Reimay"TM, a real-time MPEG-2 encoder board, jointly developed by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) and its subsidiary, NTT Electronics Corporation (NEL), and the MPEG Power BoxTM, a high quality, realtime MPEG-2 encoding system solution which utilizes the "Reimay"TM encoder and fully integrated ATM connectivity. The integration of HEURIS, NEL and Oracle products through the Video Encoding Standard (VES) API will be especially useful for corporate and broadcast video-on-demand applications. Video can be captured and compressed using the MPEG encoding products developed by HEURIS and NEL. The video is then passed through the VES API into a video server such as the Oracle Video Server in real time. The video is then finally delivered to individual desktops or set-top boxes. Users at the desktop or set top box can stop, start, fast forward or rewind the video just like a VCR. "All of the pieces for corporate intranet training and broadcast video-on-demand applications are now in place," says Brian Quandt, president of HEURIS. "With the seamless integration of these powerful MPEG encoding solutions and the truly sophisticated Oracle Video Server solution, video-on-demand is no longer just a pipe dream. It's a practical reality." Pricing and Availability The MPEG-2 and AC-3 upgrades to MPEG Power Professional will be available direct from HEURIS and through dealers. These upgrades are expected to ship in Q3 1997. MPEG Power Professional with MPEG-2 will sell for a list price of $2500 and MPEG Power Professional with AC-3 will be available for a list price of $4000. The MPEG-2 upgrade will be available free of charge to all MPEG Power Professional customers who purchased before May 1, 1997.
