Project Description A Vue is a short animation by Joshua Mosley that combines hand-painted backgrounds, a bronze monument and stop-motion puppets. The eight-minute, HD projected animation opened September, 2004 as a installation at Donald Young Gallery, Chicago. The
presentation of a high resolution image with subtle color distinctions was
required to allow each element (fabric, clay, watercolor paper, metal, and
plastic) to maintain distinct tactile qualities. The
stop-motion puppet animation was captured in front of a green screen,
frame-by-frame, into a computer with a digital still camera at 3072x2048
pixels. The background animations were pre-visualized with Maya, then
printed out onto typing paper. Multiple ink-wash paintings were then made
using each print as tracing guide. These paintings were re-scanned at
2560x1440 pixels with a flatbed scanner.
The
resulting 18,000 images were composited at 1920x1080 pixels, 12 fps using
After Effects. The animation was edited off-line at standard video
resolution, and then the full resolution After Effects project was
conformed to match the edit. The
final challenge was playing the 60 gigabyte movie with sync sound. A
high-def mpeg-2 was needed for the Mediasonic hdFrend player. Heuris
software was used to compress the movie at 1080 24p at 25 MBPS. Mosley
comments, The final challenge turned out to be the easiest part, Heuris
software was well documented and straight-forward. I cant imagine how
Heuris can make the file 25x smaller. It looks great!
